WHAT IS THE CHILD GUIDANCE CENTER?

CGC is a private, non-profit, outpatient mental health facility for children, adolescents and their families.  The Center is affiliated with United Way and the University of Texas Health Science Center.  CGC has been serving families concerned about their children since 1956.  Fees are on a sliding scale, based on level of family income.  CGC is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of child and adolescent psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and clinical social workers.

Social Workers and Licensed Professional Counselors must have a masters degree in their field and be licensed by the state of Texas. Psychologists must have a Ph.D. and be licensed by the state of Texas. Psychiatrists have graduated from medical school and are continuing futher medical training in order to specialize in psychiatry and then be licensed by the state of Texas.

WHAT DOES THE CHILD GUIDANCE CENTER DO?

CGC offers a full range of diagnostic services including individual and family psychosocial assessments, psychiatric evaluations, and medication management.  The Center uses a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment and treatment of emotional, behavioral and learning disorders.

WHY IS THE CHILD GUIDANCE CENTER IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY?

The Center provides quality outpatient mental health care to children and adolescents and their families regardless of family income. We are committed to identifying and addressing needs quickly, achieving positive results and providing our services in an ethical manner. The Center staff provides services at the Babcock site as well as numerous locations around Bexar County through collaboration with the Juvenile Justice Academy and area schools.

HOW DOES THE CHILD GUIDANCE CENTER WORK?

The Child Guicance Center is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. These community leaders and volunteers meet regularly with Ed Schmidt, Executive Director,Thomas L. Matthews, M.D., Medical Director, and Karl Koch, Ph.D., Clinical Director, to set policy and monitor Center Activities.

HOW IS THE CHILD GUIDANCE CENTER SUPPORTED?

The Center is able to provide services on a sliding scale basis because of community support from United Way and private contributors.  The Center provides these critical mental health services to children and their families irrespective of ability to pay.  Additional services are provided to other child serving agencies on a cost recovery basis.  The Center is audited annually by Carneiro, Chumney & Co., Certified Public Accountants.
